FAQs

Has Zerodha launched US stocks investing on its platform?

Yes. The segment is live now, ready to activate from your Zerodha account.

Who is eligible to invest in US stocks through Zerodha?

Any resident Indian with an individual Zerodha account. If you don't have one, you can open a new account and then activate US stocks. Joint accounts, HUFs, companies, LLPs, partnership firms and NRIs are not eligible.

Can I invest in foreign or international stocks from India?

Currently, Zerodha's Global stocks segment supports US-listed stocks and ETFs only, covering up to 2,000 companies and around 1,000 ETFs. Other international markets are not available yet.

How do I buy and sell US stocks in my Zerodha account?

If you already have a Zerodha account, activate the US stocks segment from account.zerodha.com. If you are new, open a Zerodha account first and then activate US stocks. Once activated, US stocks and ETFs appear under the International tab in Kite. You can search, place an order and track your global holdings the same way you would for Indian stocks.

Can I invest in US stocks through a SIP?

Yes. You can set up a SIP on eligible US stocks, which is a recurring investment in the stock itself. US stock SIPs show in a separate tab from your Indian SIPs.

When do US stock markets open and close in Indian time?

NYSE and NASDAQ run 7:00 PM to 1:30 AM IST during US Daylight Saving Time (March to November), and 8:00 PM to 2:30 AM IST the rest of the year. You can place orders anytime, and they execute once the market opens.

What is the limit for investing in US stocks from India?

Up to $250,000 per financial year under LRS. This limit is shared across all your LRS transactions, not just US stock investments, and is tracked against your PAN.

What are the charges for trading in US stocks?

Brokerage is 0.1% of trade value (minimum $0.01, maximum $10) on both buy and sell orders, plus 18% GST on the brokerage amount. Regulatory fees (SEC, FINRA and IFSCA turnover fee) are included in the brokerage, so there are no other charges. Check detailed charges on US stock investments.

Is it safe to invest in US stocks from India?

Yes. Investments are made under RBI's regulated Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), through Zerodha's US broker partner, with your holdings protected under SIPC coverage in the US.

How are US stock investments taxed in India?

Capital gains are taxed only in India under the India-US DTAA. Long-term gains held over 24 months are taxed at 12.5%. Short-term gains are taxed at your income slab rate. Dividends are taxed at a reduced 25% in the US and can be claimed as a foreign tax credit in India.

Can Indian investors participate in intraday and F&O trading on US exchanges?
