Zerodha users now have unlimited access to Streak

I had a conversation with the legendary Jack Schwager, the author of one of the best books ever written for active trading, Markets Wizards, a few years back. Market Wizards is a collection of interviews with some of the best traders in the world and a must-read for any aspiring trader.

During our conversation, Jack said that the common trait among the successful traders he has interviewed is “discipline in terms of money management”. This could be by having stoploss for every trade, a total exposure limit per trade, position sizing based on the trend, i.e., a larger bet size if the trade is with the trend of the market or against it, etc.

He also said that technical analysis (TA) is a great tool for both traders and investors because it helps with the key aspect of trading, which is money management.

1. Most TA strategies force you to trade with the trend. Trading against the trend is one big reason why traders lose money.
2. While there are a few strategies that are countertrend, the idea while trading them is to have smaller positions. So in a way, bet-sizing is inherent when using TA.
3. Every TA strategy has a defined stoploss. Not having stoplosses is by far the biggest reason for traders not doing well when trading. As a disclaimer, having too many stoplosses is also a big reason why traders lose money. So we could say that overtrading and having no stops are the biggest reasons for traders not doing well, and TA can help with both.

Scanners

On Streak, you will find a collection of over 250+ pre-built scanners that are based on technical indicators. You can easily copy existing scanners and edit them or create your own scanners.

Note: While you can access most of the platform without logging in, to place orders and run scanners, you have to login to your Zerodha account.

Place orders on Kite

You can place orders on Kite directly from the results of your scans. Before placing an order, you click on Technicals to get a quick technical summary of that particular security.

Discover and backtest strategies

Streak has a collection of over 150+ pre-built strategies based on technical indicators for equities, futures and options. You can filter strategies based on timeframes, chart type and whether you have a bullish view or bearish view. Before deploying a strategy, you can backtest the strategy and see if it makes sense to trade it. You can look at stats such as number of trades, wins, losses, average gains, average losses and drawdown of the strategy.

Virtual Deployment

If you want to get a sense of how a particular strategy performs in live markets, you can deploy the strategy virtually. No actual orders are placed but the system assumes that you would have placed buy and sell orders based on the entry and exit conditions. You can track these orders from the order log to see the P&L.

Streak has the world’s best virtual deployment feature that tracks every deployed strategy real-time in the markets for both entry and exit conditions with multiple strategy cycles. Note that no real orders get placed for these deployments as they are virtual. The system merely assumes that the order was placed when the entry/exit conditions were triggered and calculates the hypothetical P&L which is then shown in the Deployed page and the OrderLog.

Nevertheless, this gives you a clear picture on how your trading system would have worked in markets, had you deployed this strategy live in the markets.
