India's Redington posts higher quarterly profit on strong cloud demand (May 19)
Corrects paragraph 1 in May 19 story to clarify Redington does not distribute Samsung products in India
May 19 (Reuters) - Redington REDI.NS, a distributor for Apple AAPL.O in India, reported an increase in adjusted quarterly profit, driven by higher demand for cloud services and automation.
The Chennai, Tamil Nadu-based company reported a profit before exceptional items and tax of 5.22 billion rupees ($61.14 million) for the fourth-quarter ended March 31, compared to 3.81 billion rupees last year.
It recorded a one-time gain worth 6.26 billion rupees from divestment of its Turkey-based unit Paynet.
Redington primarily generates revenue from the sale of smartphones, computers, and other hardware products.
However, its cloud and automation businesses saw the fastest growth on back of increased adoption of the technology.
About 50% of total IT spending globally is now cloud-related and it is projected to increase to 58% by 2027, according to research firm Gartner.
Redington's revenue from operations rose nearly 18% to 264.40 billion rupees, driven by deeper penetration in the South Asian markets and expansion in African markets.
Revenue from Singapore, India and the rest of South Asia, which account for nearly half of the company's business, increased by 25%.

Indian IT products distributor Redington's profit falls on subdued demand in some markets
BENGALURU, Oct 29 (Reuters) - Indian IT products distributor Redington REDI.NS reported a 3.5% fall in second-quarter profit on Tuesday, hurt by slowdown in demand for personal computers and phones in some of its international markets.
Over the last few quarters, markets like Turkey and Africa have been sore spots for Redington, which distributes gadgets produced by Apple AAPL.O and Samsung 005930.KS, as high inflation has squeezed consumer spending.
The company's consolidated net profit stood at 2.93 billion rupees ($34.9 million) for the three months ending Sept. 30, compared to 3.03 billion rupees a year earlier.
Revenue from its biggest verticals - personal computers and print supplies, and mobile phones - dropped 3% and 4%, respectively in the rest of the world segment which includes countries such as Turkey.
"Challenges in the Turkey business continued due to softening demand caused by tough market conditions," V.S. Hariharan, group chief executive officer, said in a statement.
Redington has also been expanding its reach globally, driving its total expenses up by around 12% in the quarter.
Its revenue from operations also rose 12% to 248.96 billion rupees, aided by steady demand in the Indian and south Asian markets.

India's Redington sees AI-enabled PCs powering tech upgrades
By Praveen Paramasivam
CHENNAI, Feb 15 (Reuters) - India's Redington REDI.NS expects demand for personal computers to bounce back next financial year as customers are likely to warm up to new devices with artificial intelligence features, a top executive at the tech goods distributor said.
Global PC sales are showing signs of recovery after inflation-hit customers delayed system upgrades for several quarters, results of chipmakers including Samsung Electronics 005930.KS and Intel INTC.O showed.
"The advent of AI, PCs will also drive tech refresh," Redington's Singapore, India and South Asia (SISA) CEO Ramesh Natarajan told Reuters, adding that he sees its PC business posting a single-digit percentage growth in fiscal 2025 in the region after reporting declines in the last six quarters.
AI-enabled PCs refer to machines that come with chips capable of running large-language models and apps powered by the technology directly on the device, instead of the cloud.
"Considering the replacement cycles for PCs have averaged around three to four years, we believe 2024 will be the year that will see some rebound," said Neil Shah, vice president of research at Counterpoint Research.
SISA revenue from Redington's end-point solutions unit, which distributes PCs and printers, fell 7% to 100.72 billion rupees ($1.21 billion) in the nine months ended Dec. 31.
The segment, which accounts for about 15% of the group's total revenue, had gained during the pandemic when businesses and individuals spent heavily to set up home offices. But many are yet to upgrade.
Natarajan also expects more growth in Redington's mobile phone business, which distributes smartphones from Apple, Google and others, as affluent Indians splurge on phones that cost more than 30,000 rupees ($361.30). The segment had seen a 61% revenue jump in the first nine months of fiscal 2024 in the SISA region.
Redington has been sharpening its focus on its cloud services business to expand beyond gadget distribution, which brings in a bulk of its revenue.

India's Redington posts 10% fall in Q3 profit as gadget demand wanes
CHENNAI, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Indian technology products distributor Redington REDI.NS reported a 10% decline in third-quarter profit on Tuesday, amid waning demand for electronic goods from individuals and businesses.
Persistent inflation has eroded household and corporate budgets globally, prompting consumers to cut back spending on newer models of gadgets, including laptops and personal computers.
The Apple and Samsung gadgets distributor said consolidated profit dropped to 3.41 billion rupees ($41.1 million) for the third quarter ended Dec. 31, according to an exchange filing.
Revenue from operations rose 8% to 235.05 billion rupees, marking its slowest growth and the first single-digit increase in two years. Total expenses climbed 9%, further eating into its earnings.
Redington, which has partnered with over 300 brands including Dell and Microsoft, had earlier said that elevated inflation and interest rates, as well as weaker currencies in certain countries pose challenges.
Shares of the Chennai, Tamil Nadu-based company closed 2% higher ahead of the results.

India's Redington's quarterly profit falls as expenses mount
CHENNAI, Aug 1 (Reuters) - India's Redington REDI.NS reported a 21% fall in quarterly profit on Tuesday, as the technology devices distributor wrestled with higher expenses at a time when demand for work-from-home equipment also slowed.
The Chennai-based company, which distributes IT products of global giants like Apple AAPL.O and Dell Technologies DELL.N, said net profit dropped to 2.49 billion rupees ($30.3 million) for the quarter ended June 30, compared with 3.16 billion rupees a year earlier.
Corporations globally are reeling from the impact of higher expenses, partly due to higher interest rates, while several firms including Redington are also investing heavily to digitize their businesses more.
The company reported expenses climbing 27%, which ate into its bottomline.
A pandemic-led demand for consumer electronics, including smartphones and personal computers, is fading as people are spending more time in physical schools and offices, denting demand for work- and learn-from-home equipment.
Revenue from operations rose 26% to 211.87 billion rupees but dropped 3% sequentially.
Revenue from its rest of the world unit, which makes up more than half of its topline and includes the Middle East, Turkey and Africa, dropped around 5% from the previous quarter even as it jumped 29% from a year earlier.
Shares of Redington closed 1.6% higher ahead of its results, with the stock up just over 1% this year.
