Unilever's India unit quarterly profit falls as thinner margins weigh
Updates with analyst commentary in paragraphs 6 and 7, parent results in paragraph 9
By Praveen Paramasivam and Komal Salecha
Feb 12 (Reuters) - Hindustan Unilever HLL.NS reported a 15% decline in quarterly profit on Thursday, pressured by thinner margins as the consumer goods major cut some product prices to counter rising competition, sending shares lower.
The local subsidiary of UK's Unilever ULVR.L, home to Dove and Surf Excel brands, said its profit from continuing operations fell to 25.90 billion rupees ($286.05 million) for the quarter ended December 31.
Shares fell as much as 4.6% after the results.
Total expenses climbed 5%, with EBITDA margins shrinking by 70 basis points from a year earlier to 23.3%, after Hindustan Unilever cut prices in its tea business and home care portfolios, partly to stave off competition.
Hindustan Unilever has grappled with stiff competition in fabric care from startups as well as Ariel detergent maker Procter & Gamble PG.N and India's Godrej Consumer Products GOCP.NS.
Three analysts said Hindustan Unilever's margins missed their estimates. Akshay D'Souza, an independent consumer goods consultant, said the company's focus on distribution-led growth, a slower pace of launches and acquisition spending have squeezed margins.
However, its sales growth improved, rising 4% from a year earlier to 156.14 billion rupees. A 4% increase in sales volume growth is "a bright spot," said Ajay Thakur, research analyst at Anand Rathi Institutional Equities.
Consumer goods makers, including Britannia Industries BRIT.NS and Hindustan Unilever, expect demand to pick up after several subdued quarters, supported by tax cuts and easing inflation that have bolstered urban spending.
Hindustan Unilever expects the fiscal year starting April to be better than the current year. But its parent firm expects 2026 sales growth to be at the lower end of its forecast after a slowdown in the U.S. and Europe.
Hindustan Unilever on Thursday also said it would buy the remaining 49% stake in plant-based food brand Oziva for 8.24 billion rupees.

India's Mahindra Holidays posts weak Q4 earnings on tepid international travel demand
April 25 (Reuters) - Mahindra Holidays and Resorts India MAHH.NS reported a more than 11% fall in fourth-quarter profit on Friday due to sluggish demand for international travel amid geopolitical tensions and cost pressures.
Mahindra Holidays' consolidated net profit fell to 730.8 million rupees ($8.6 million) in the March quarter, from 823.6 million rupees a year earlier.
Geopolitical tensions and higher costs of travelling abroad held back consumers from taking trips in Europe.
That weighed on the company, which gets about half of its total revenue from its international business, which includes properties across Finland, Sweden and Spain.
Total income at its international business unit, Holiday Club Resorts (HCR), fell to 39.7 million euros ($45 million) from 41.9 million euros a year ago.
However, surging spending on local leisure travel amid the government's stated goal of making India one of the top five global tourist destinations by 2030, partly offset the decline in international business.
While domestic hotel occupancy dipped to 84.6% from 87.3% a year ago, revenue from the segment rose 5.7% to 4.03 billion rupees in the quarter, as people splurged more.
Overall revenue from operations fell 2.6% to 7.79 billion rupees owing to a 9% fall in the company's international business.
Shares of Mahindra Holidays, which offers resorts and sightseeing packages through its "Club Mahindra" membership and generates revenue through membership fees, closed 5.4% lower ahead of the results.

India's Mahindra Holidays posts lower Q2 profit as international travel slows
Oct 25 (Reuters) - Mahindra Holidays and Resorts India MAHH.NS reported a 35% fall in its second-quarter profit on Friday, bogged down by weak sentiment towards international travel.
Shares of the company, which offers resorts and sightseeing packages through its 'Club Mahindra' membership and generates revenue through membership fees, fell about 3% after the results.
Mahindra Holidays' consolidated net profit fell to 137.7 million rupees ($1.64 million) in the September quarter, from 213.4 million rupees a year earlier.
Geopolitical tensions and higher costs of travelling abroad have held back consumers from making international travels, analysts said.
That weighed on Mahindra Holidays, which gets about 47% of its total revenue from its international business that includes properties across Finland, Sweden and Spain.
"The macroeconomic conditions continue to impact overall performance," the company's managing director and CEO, Manoj Bhat, said about European operations.
Total income at the international business, Holiday Club Resorts (HCR), fell to 34.2 million euros ($37 million) from 36.6 million euros a year ago, and also weighed on margins.
However, the company's overall revenue was boosted by surging demand for leisure travel domestically, coupled with the government's focus on tourism and hospitality to make India one of the top five global tourist destinations by 2030.
Total revenue grew 2% to 6.71 billion rupees in the quarter.

India's Mahindra Holidays' Q2 profit nearly halves
BENGALURU, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Mahindra Holidays and Resorts India MAHH.NS posted a 47.8% drop in second-quarter profit on Monday, dragged down by its European business and higher expenses.
The hospitality chain, which runs the 'Club Mahindra' brand of resorts, said its consolidated net profit fell to 213.4 million rupees ($2.57 million) for the quarter ended Sept. 30, from 408.6 million rupees a year earlier.
Its European segment - called Holiday Club Resorts Oy (HCR), comprising nearly half of the topline - reported a loss before tax of 23.1 million rupees, compared with a profit of 10.2 million rupees a year earlier.
This compares to a loss before tax of 365.2 million rupees in its European operations in the first quarter.
The European business took a hit during the September-quarter as people cut back on leisure travel amid rising costs of living and higher inflation.
Total expenditure jumped 10.7%, which outpaced a 9.5% rise in revenue to 6.55 billion rupees. The company also flagged a one-off expense of 68 million rupees.
Additionally, heavy rains and landslides in the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand affected resort occupancy, which fell to 77% from 79% a year ago, the company said.
Shares of the hospitality firm fell as much as 10.8% after the results. The stock advanced 32% in the September-quarter.
