Antony Waste Handling Cell confirmed that nine employees died when thousands of tonnes of waste, loosened by heavy rains, collapsed onto the administration building at its Pimpri Chinchwad waste-to-energy plant. Fourteen other employees were rescued and are receiving medical care and counselling. The company announced ex-gratia assistance of ₹25 lakh for each bereaved family, coverage of all medical and funeral costs, employment for one immediate family member where suitable, and financial support for the education of the deceased employees’ minor children. Senior management is personally meeting the affected families. Operations at the waste-to-energy plant have been temporarily suspended as a precaution while a structural and safety assessment is conducted. Municipal waste collection and transportation services are not affected, and the company’s assets and operations are adequately insured. The financial impact of the incident is under assessment and will be disclosed later.
