May 4 (Reuters) - The Reserve Bank of India and the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India are not inclined to allow banks and insurance companies to invest in commodity derivatives, the chairman of India's markets regulator said on Monday.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India in September said it will engage with the government to enable banks and pension funds to trade commodities as part of its agenda to strengthen commodities markets.

In his statement on Monday, SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey added that India's pension fund regulator had also looked at allowing pension funds to invest in commodity derivatives, but did not disclose whether it had made a decision.

Shares of Multi Commodity Exchange of India MCEI.NS(MCX), India's first listed exchange, fell 3.4% after the chairman's comment.

Separately, SEBI will soon issue an ​advisory ​to market intermediaries ⁠on emerging ​risks from ​Anthropic's Mythos and other artificial intelligence ​tools, Pandey said, adding that the regulator wants intermediaries to be prepared for potential system vulnerabilities.

MUMBAI, July 8 (Reuters) - India's Multi Commodity Exchange MCEI.NS will launch the country's first electricity futures contracts on Thursday, providing power generators, distribution companies, and large industrial consumers with a tool to hedge their risks.

The exchange will initially launch cash-settled contracts for the current and next three-month periods, but they will subsequently be available for all 12 calendar months, MCX said in a statement on Tuesday.

The exchange's managing director Praveena Rai said the goal is to address the sector's needs, deepen energy markets, and support sustainable, market-driven power pricing.

Weather has always heavily affected India's power demand, with needs peaking during summer heat and easing with the moderate temperatures accompanying the seasonal monsoon rains. However, increasingly erratic weather patterns, with more heatwaves and untimely rainfall, have made demand harder to predict.

Currently, Indian utilities rely mainly on long-term power purchase agreements spanning up to 25 years for base load requirements, supplemented with short-term purchases through power exchanges for peak demand.

Expensive long-term power purchases, subsidised supply, and electricity losses due to poor infrastructure, however, have left India's distribution companies with debts of around $9.5 billion, according to the government.

India's National Stock Exchange will open trading of similar monthly electricity futures from July 14, the bourse operator said last week.

June 17 (Reuters) - India's power market regulator on Tuesday proposed amending its electricity trading rules to introduce Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA), a new financial instrument aimed at helping consumers meet renewable energy obligations and trade power.

The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission's (CERC) draft proposal formally recognizes VPPAs as over-the-counter (OTC) contracts that will help large industrial buyers meet clean energy targets without taking physical delivery.

Under the draft Power Market Regulations, 2025, a VPPA allows a consumer to agree on a fixed price with a renewable energy generator, who then sells the electricity in the open market.

The difference between the agreed VPPA price and the actual market price is settled financially between the two parties.

While the VPPAs offer an innovative pathway for large consumers to meet their renewable consumption obligations, they risk becoming a mere compliance mechanism, enabling consumers to claim 100% renewable usage, Ember analysts said early this month.

Indian exchanges, National Stock Exchange NSEI.NS and Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) MCEI.NS last week announced that they will launch power derivative contracts.

The draft regulation also proposes to enhance CERC's powers to inspect and audit power exchanges and OTC platforms.

CERC has invited public comments on the draft until July 14 before finalizing the regulation.

MUMBAI, Dec 19 (Reuters) - India extended the suspension of trading in derivative contracts for key farm commodities until January, as the world's largest importer of vegetable oils and a major producer of wheat and rice seeks to curb food inflation.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) initially ordered a year-long suspension of futures trading in key farm commodities in 2021 — a significant move since futures trading was allowed in 2003.

The suspension was first extended until December 20, 2023, and later to December 20, 2024.

In a notification issued late on Wednesday, SEBI said the suspension of trading in futures contracts would now continue until January 31, 2025, on soybean and its derivatives, crude palm oil, wheat, paddy rice, chickpeas, green gram and rapeseed.

"Instead of extending the ban for a year as it did in the past two instances, it has extended it for only one month. This is a good sign. Perhaps futures trading will be allowed early next year," said a Mumbai-based dealer with a global trade house.

The Indian vegetable oil industry has been seeking the resumption of futures trading to help importers hedge their risks and provide oilseed growers with an indication of future price movements.

The resumption of futures trading in soybean, rapeseed, and their derivatives would help bring stability to oilseed prices, said B V Mehta, executive director of The Solvent Extractors' Association of India.

India meets nearly two-thirds of its edible oil requirements through imports, primarily of palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia, as well as soyoil and sunflower oil from Argentina, Brazil, Russia, and Ukraine.

India's National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX), which derives most of its volume from trading in farm commodities, was the most affected by the government's decision, followed by the Multi Commodity Exchange MCEI.NS.
