Introducing Two Brothers Organic Farms

July 4, 2024

While Rainmatter started as a fintech incubator in 2016, we have evolved to also focus on Climate and Health. The question we kept asking ourselves was—what is the point of saving & investing without having a sound mind and body and a healthy planet? These questions led us to meet several teams solving climate challenges like soil quality and health metrics like clean food. Two Brother Organic Farms (TBOF) team is one of these we visited in Pune. To sum up our visit in one sentence—we were amazed at the work that has gone behind the scenes for years, all chasing the same questions we were asking ourselves.

While we mentioned Pune earlier, the origin of TBOF is in Bhodani village in Maharashtra, a two-hour drive from Pune City. We could see why the company has done extremely well as soon as we reached their farms and sourcing centres. While located in a small rural village, the attention to detail with well-marked signboards and information placards for setups like biogas and cowsheds was exemplary. The TBOF model works by partnering with farmers within a 200 km radius of Bhodani, helping them adopt model organic farming practices. Through these partnerships, they offer direct market access to farmers supplying staples like wheat and rice, along with other produce like ghee and oil made from farmer sourced milk and oil seeds. You can check out the entire gamut of things on their website here.

It was enlightening for us to meet the farmers working with TBOF. There were about 15 of them, and most of them had travelled 50-100 km to be there when we visited. They explained how awareness plus education and support from TBOF has helped them manage soil quality, ensure predictable incomes, and also have direct access to markets. They explained how this model is a drastic change from yesteryears when they all struggled to break even on farming. Since agriculture today employs around 50% of our workforce and constitutes only around 15% of our GDP, there is a larger problem to address here. This is why the work TBOF is doing is even more critical.

While we can go on and on about the great work TBOF is doing, we’ll just sum up the discussions with the TBOF team as the perfect match for our philosophy at Rainmatter. From contributing to livelihoods to building a business the right way, they bring a complete package to the table (Pun absolutely intended :P).

We are excited to support Satya and Ajinkya in their journey. Here is what they had to say about TBOF and the journey so far.

At Two Brothers Organic Farms, our mission is rooted in the belief that clean, good, and chemical-free food should be accessible to everyone. Our journey, which began with a simple yet powerful vision, has blossomed into a thriving ecosystem that supports farmers, co-workers, and consumers alike.

Empowering Farmers for Sustainable Agriculture

We are proud to work with over 5,000 farmers, offering them financial and educational support to transition to and thrive in organic farming. By providing rates that are 30% higher than the market, along with training from seed to harvest, we ensure our farmers not only survive but prosper. Our comprehensive support system includes assistance in obtaining organic certifications, which opens up new markets and opportunities for their produce.

Leading with Technology and Innovation

Our operations are bolstered by robust technology, with eco-cert and NPOP certified farms integrated into a seamless organic farm business. We utilize advanced ERP systems, farmer apps, and specialized software to manage everything from agri-inputs to packaging. Our main factory, spanning 24,000 sq ft in MIDC Indapur, is complemented by additional plants to meet the growing demand. By 2025, we will commission another 16,000 sq ft plant, further enhancing our production capabilities.

Economic Impact and Farmer Prosperity

On average, farmers working with Two Brothers Organic Farms earn a net profit of INR 60,000 per month, with their incomes growing by at least 10% annually over the past three years. This consistent growth reflects our commitment to improving the livelihoods of those who grow our food. The diverse range of organic products our farmers produce includes milk, poultry, bananas, honey, tender coconuts, and millets.

Transparent and Engaging Consumer Experience

Transparency is at the heart of what we do. We actively engage with our community through social media, showcasing how our food is grown and reaches the customer’s table. Our traceability system allows consumers to see the journey of each batch, ensuring trust and confidence in our products. Community outreach events further educate the public on the benefits of healthy, organic, and chemical-free food.

Sustainable Practices and Environmental Stewardship

Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond our products. We use 100% sustainable and recyclable packaging, and our operations are designed to be net carbon positive. Over 70% of our workforce comprises women from the local village, reflecting our dedication to social equity. We support 15 out of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and are certified by numerous prestigious agencies, including FSSAI, IAF, AQSR, USDA Organic, ECOCERT, and the US FDA.

Our ghee plant is powered entirely by solar energy, and we have planted over 30,000 trees across our farms. These efforts not only enhance biodiversity but also contribute to the overall health of our ecosystem.

Building a Strong and Passionate Community

With over 400,000 happy customers across 60+ countries and a growing community of 190,000+ followers on Instagram, we are committed to expanding our reach and impact. Our goal is to double our revenue in the next year while maintaining a close eye on profitability and efficiency. We aim to increase our coverage of organic farmers fivefold in the coming years, driven by our passion for sustainable agriculture and our commitment to building a company that stands the test of time.

Looking Ahead

Our journey is fueled by genuine passion and the relentless pursuit of excellence. As we continue to grow, our focus remains on empowering farmers, producing clean food, and protecting the environment. With a dedicated team and a supportive community, we are confident in our ability to achieve our ambitious goals and create a lasting impact on the world.
