Introducing Gen E, The Plate, and Sochcast

February 4, 2025

We live in a world facing many challenges—economic, social, environmental, and more. It’s clear we can’t keep doing the same things and expect new results. There are plenty of great ideas out there, but they often don’t make it into our everyday conversations. That’s why storytelling is so important: it helps us see what’s possible and inspires us to make real changes in our lives.

At Rainmatter, we believe storytelling, journalism, and community engagement can bridge the gap between grassroots work and people’s daily realities. We’re excited to introduce three initiatives we’re supporting: Generation Earth Media (gen.E), The Plate, and Sochcast. Each focuses on a different area—sustainability, food systems, and women’s voices—but they all share a common goal: to spark meaningful dialogue, highlight new perspectives, and make important issues easier for everyone to relate to.

When we bring research, policy insights, and real-world examples into our collective imagination, we can start to see how everyone can play a part. With these partnerships, we hope to encourage wider engagement, so that good ideas don’t stay on the sidelines but instead move into the spotlight—where they can truly make a difference. Because when communities become better informed and more engaged, real transformation isn’t just possible – it’s inevitable.

  1. Generation Earth Media (gen.E)

gen.E began in January 2024 with a simple yet powerful goal: to tell stories of hope and innovation in the sustainability space. Backed by a team with decades of international journalism experience, gen.E has rapidly grown into a community of over 400,000 followers who care deeply about making sustainability accessible. From solar-powered airports to startups transforming waste into opportunity, each story illustrates that sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a movement. gen.E believes real change starts with honest conversations, and by sharing relatable, actionable solutions, they inspire more people to join in creating a greener future.

  2. The Plate India

The Plate is all about shining light on India’s massive—and often overlooked—food and agriculture sector. Worth around $800 billion and responsible for nearly 18% of our economy, agriculture touches half our workforce and uses a big chunk of our land and water. Yet, media attention to this critical sector is usually limited to distress stories or urban consumer angles like food inflation. The Plate wants to change that narrative by taking young, curious minds on a journey from farm to plate—into farmers’ fields, rural markets, research labs, and beyond. They believe that if more Indians understood how their food is grown, processed, and sold, they’d ask tougher questions and push for better solutions. Through storytelling that’s both clear and captivating, The Plate aims to spark greater awareness and engagement, ultimately helping India harness the true potential of its food and agriculture systems.

  3. Sochcast

Sochcast grew from the simple belief that a nation is only as strong as the voices of its women. It began as an ambitious radio concept—India’s first talk-format FM station for women—and has since evolved into the world’s first spoken-word audio platform (SWAP) for Indian women. Producing over 500,000 minutes of multilingual content across 50+ categories, Sochcast creates safe, interest-based communities for women to share their stories, connect, and learn from each other.

Recognizing that women aren’t a single monolithic group and that their needs vary across life stages, Sochcast has introduced CampusGal—a digital content and community platform focusing on college-going women. By engaging them at a crucial turning point in their personal and professional lives, Sochcast equips young women with mentorship, resources, and the confidence to shape their own futures. The idea is simple, but powerful: when women’s voices are amplified early, everyone benefits—families, communities, and ultimately the nation.
