Introducing Devigere Biosolutions
One of the key challenges in the nutrition space is the production and availability of adequate protein in an environmentally sustainable and affordable way. Plant-based proteins present a promising solution to our nutritional needs due to their long history of crop use and cultivation, lower cost of production, and easy access in many parts of the world.
Plant proteins often lag behind their animal-based counterparts in functional properties crucial for food processing. Issues such as poor solubility, foaming, emulsifying, and gelling present hurdles that must be overcome to unlock their potential fully. Compared to animal protein processing, plant-based protein is still in its infancy. There is a need and opportunity for advancements in ingredient development and developing expertise in food formulation.
In this landscape, we are excited by the work of Devigere Biosolutions. Smitha (Founder) and her team aim to harness indigenous pulses to create protein formulations with applications in the food and beauty industries. The idea is to replace the reliance on costly imported protein formulations with a homegrown, clean-label, plant-based alternative. The fact that this will bolster food security and local economies in India is a cherry on the cake.
Devigere’s approach diverges from conventional protein extraction methods, often involving harsh chemicals like solvents, acids, and alkalis. The use of these chemicals results in a lower-quality end product. Devigere, on the other hand, employs a water-based extraction process that preserves the integrity of the protein, ultimately yielding a superior product. The resulting protein concentrates are free from chemical residues, have greater solubility, and offer a better nutritional profile.
We are excited to support them in this journey. Here’s a note from Smitha, the founder:
Note from founder
Devigere Biosolutions is dedicated to producing some of the world’s most premium and functional plant proteins. Our patented technology enables us to produce highly functional and versatile, water-soluble protein concentrate from pulses, which is 100 % chemical and solvent-free.
Our flagship products, Pulsepro® —Mung bean protein concentrates and Pulsepro® —Black-eyed pea protein concentrates—boast exceptional properties, including high gel strength, emulsification, and foaming capabilities.
We pride ourselves on our core strength in research and innovation. Located in Bangalore, our R&D facility offers comprehensive solutions for any plant protein ingredient requirement.
One of the most distinctive features of our protein is its ability to serve as a single-ingredient egg white substitute. Leveraging this unique property, we have developed a range of plant-based products, such as mayonnaise, eggless cake mixes, and pancake mixes, for the B2B market.
Our mission is to provide nutrient-rich, clean-label, and sustainable protein ingredients for the protein nutraceuticals and functional food sectors. By November 2024, we aim to have the capacity to produce 60 metric tons of protein per year.
We are thrilled to announce our partnership with Rainmatter Health. This collaboration will enable us to create globally recognised protein products by harnessing local innovations in the plant protein sector.
Hello. This seems great. However, unless I am mistaken, protein sourced from plants, particularly pulses, has low bioavailability and an incomplete EAA profile. I was hoping to understand your thoughts around it and if you are taking any particular measures to fix it. Thanks
