Transfer charge refund and no AMC for the first year

June 2, 2026

We have two big updates going live from June 1st.

First, if you’re moving your holdings from another broker to Zerodha, we’ll refund the depository charges your current broker charges for the transfer, up to ₹500.

This isn’t limited to new accounts. If you already have a Zerodha account and are transferring holdings from another broker, you’ll be eligible for the refund too.

Second, no account maintenance charges (AMC) for the first year on all new Zerodha accounts (resident individual accounts). In many cases, the actual AMC is either zero or very low because of BSDA. But just knowing there’s a recurring charge can make people pause before opening an account. So for the first year, we’re removing it entirely.

Refer your friends and family

Both changes are meant to remove small costs that often feel bigger than they actually are when you’re just getting started or switching brokers.

Refund on transfer charges

When you transfer holdings from one broker to another, your current broker usually charges a fee for each stock you transfer. These charges are typically ₹10 to ₹30 per stock. If you hold 15 to 20 stocks, this can add up to a few hundred rupees. From June 1st, if you transfer your stock holdings from another broker to Zerodha, we’ll refund these transfer charges up to ₹500.

There’s also no brokerage on equity delivery trades at Zerodha, which helps you save even more.

Also, when you transfer holdings to Zerodha, you can add the original purchase details on Console to track your portfolio accurately.

How to transfer your holdings to Zerodha

You can transfer your holdings online or offline, depending on where your current demat account is held.

Online via CDSL Easiest

If both your current broker and Zerodha are on CDSL, you can transfer your holdings online through CDSL Easiest. Once you register on the Easiest platform, you can submit transfer instructions without any physical paperwork.

Offline via DIS slip

If your current broker is on NSDL, submit a Delivery Instruction Slip to your current broker with Zerodha’s DP details. The transfer is usually processed within one to two working days.

Zerodha’s DP details:

  • DP Name: Zerodha Broking Ltd
  • DP ID: 12081600/12081601/12081602
  • Client ID: Your 8-digit Zerodha client ID

For a step-by-step guide, refer to this support article on transferring holdings to Zerodha.

Once you have transferred your holdings, you can create a ticket here to claim your refund.

No AMC for the first year

The second change is for people who are opening a new Zerodha account (resident individual account).

We’ve never advertised aggressively or used offers to push people to open accounts. But we kept hearing one concern from people who wanted to start investing: “Will I have to keep paying just to keep the account open?”

In many cases, the actual cost was either zero or very low. For many first-time investors, AMC may not be a meaningful cost even after the first year because of BSDA. But the idea of a recurring maintenance charge was still enough to make people delay opening an account.

So we’re removing that concern for the first year.

From June 1st, all new Zerodha accounts will have no AMC for the first year, regardless of the value of holdings. We also have zero AMC for minor accounts.

Zerodha already has zero brokerage on equity delivery, zero brokerage on direct mutual funds through Coin, and free account opening. With no AMC for the first year, there’s one less cost to think about when getting started.

If you’re opening a demat account for the first time, you’re also automatically eligible for BSDA, the Basic Services Demat Account. SEBI introduced BSDA to reduce the cost of holding a demat account for small investors.

Under BSDA:

Holding value AMC
Below ₹4 lakh Nil
₹4 lakh to ₹10 lakh ₹100/year
Above ₹10 lakh ₹300/year

Happy investing.

    Hi,

As per a note on your website on refund of DP charges, there’s a limit of ₹30 per stock – is it excluding GST or including it? I get charged a minimum of 27 per scrip, which goes over 30 if you include GST & hence my question.

  2. Bhavik Vora says:

What if I recently transferred my holdings and opened my account from another broker in June 2025?

will my transfer charges and AMC charges refunded?

It’s a good move for customer and better for Zerodha. We are small group of traders expecting a little bit more from Zerodha if you can. On screen entry exit SL in zerodha charts just like Dhan, sahi and lemon. Removing speed and drawing issues in mobile app charts, improve screener and back test on streak.
    Thank you sir.

  6. Rishi says:

If I have SIF Mutual fund units, which are not with any broker but purchased via MF AMC, how can I transfer that to Zerodha coin account (I am existing Zerodha customer)

  7. Please make only one app for everything, not kite and Coin

  8. J k singh says:

But dhan app provide no amc and much more facilities than zerodha. You provide less facilities and demand AMC.

    Ok

  10. Sandeep says:

I have some friends who get the bank demat account free and they do not trade earlier, they try to spot and close demat account but request is not process of various resone like why to close free account and signature mismatch etc, they also have less share then 4 lac so to say less then50k on zerodha still they has to pay demat fee because of those culprit, what to do now, instead sebi must have rule that any in operative demat account has to close after say 3 year forcefully or redo kyc, to avoid this nucence

  11. SAURAV GHOSH says:

Very appreciable. Kudos. Will be transferring some shares from my angel ac soon.
And regarding AMC, it’s fine. We don’t mind paying AMC if you keep offering good and reliable services. However, I do have one suggestion. For senior citizens you should consider making the AMC free for lifetime.

  12. N S S Mallikharjuna Rao says:

  40. NS says:

    Good move.
Now Request you to reduce your FNO and intraday charges from Rs. 20 to Rs. 5/- (like Mirae that is m.stock). Else offer a fixed brokerage plan for unlimited FNO/intraday trds per month – this would greatly help, high frequency intraday and FnO traders like us, to reduce our high brokerage charges.
    Hope you are listening …

  41. Saurabh Gupta says:

The actual friction is not the dp cost of transfer securities but import of holding cost and acquisition date , for accurate tax computation. There needs to be some seamless process to migrate the details inter borker

  42. U Pasupathy says:

When we make a request for withdrawal, suggest that amount can be set aside for payment and balance can be shown as available margin for trading on that day. Many brokers like Fortune trading follow this principle so that the trading can be done in the balance available money only.
Why this system is not being followed in zerodha ? pl explain

Hi Aman, if the transfer to a Zerodha account was completed on or after June 1,2026 you’ll be eligible for the refund. You can create a ticket here to claim your refund. https://support.zerodha.com/category/your-zerodha-account/transfer-of-shares-and-conversion-of-shares/transfer-securities/articles/refund-of-transfer-charges

Can i move stocks from sbi securities to zerodha

  79. Sushil Kumar Lamba says:

I can transferred my shares Zerodha to another broker. What is the process to transfer, please tell me

  80. JD says:

Yes, generally you will be eligible for BSDA if:

You transfer all your shares from the old broker’s demat account to your Zerodha demat account.
You successfully close the old demat account.
After closure, Zerodha is the only demat account where you are the sole or first holder.
Your holdings remain within the BSDA eligibility limits. Depositories (CDSL/NSDL) periodically check eligibility across all demat accounts linked to your PAN.

SEBI’s core rule is that an individual can have only one BSDA and only one demat account as sole/first holder across depositories to qualify.

A practical point: BSDA status is determined by the depositories (CDSL/NSDL), not solely by the broker. There can be a delay between closing the old account and the eligibility records being updated.

  81. Rajnikant lunagariya says:

How to see where my broker is? Cdsl or on nsdl?

    • Shruthi says:

Hi Rajnikant, you can check whether your demat account is with CDSL or NSDL from your Consolidated Account Statement (CAS). We’ve explained how to download and access the CAS statement here. Once downloaded, it will show the depository associated with your account. https://support.zerodha.com/category/console/portfolio/statement/articles/number-of-demat-accounts

  88. Zarn says:

Please reduce your rate of FnO from 20 to 10.A huge brokerage is getting deducted due to that…

  89. Prabu says:

How the tax calculation happens when transfer from another account. example , some of stock holding with 50 to 300% profit, and few stocks are in loss.

as per your statement, original purchase details can be captured. But when I do transfer to zerodha – other broker treat it as SELL only right ? then in Tax P/L statement, i have to pay tax – STCG or LTCG.

again when i sell same stock in Zerodha, how that will treat.

Or am i wrong understanding. please revert based on that i will plan for migration of holdings.

    • Shruthi says:

Hi Prabhu, since you’re transferring the holdings to your own demat account, this is considered an off-market transfer and does not trigger capital gains tax (STCG/LTCG).

Once the holdings are transferred, you can add the original purchase date and acquisition price on Zerodha so that your buy average and holding period are tracked correctly for portfolio reporting.

Capital gains tax will apply only when you actually sell the shares, and it will be calculated based on the original purchase date and cost of acquisition, not the transfer date.

most of peoples do intraday f&O trading , in other brokers like punch is only rs.1 per trade and stoxkart is providing unlimited trading.in 699rs /year . zerodha intraday charges are very high then other brokers. i suggest for unlimited intraday plans for zerodha custmers

  91. dinesh kumar says:

To be clear is that also applicable if someone who already has account with Zerodha and open another account for long term investment and transfer all holding from another AMC?

    • Shruthi says:

Hi Dinesh, if you open a secondary demat account with Zerodha for long-term investments and transfer holdings from another broker, the account will not be considered a BSDA, so AMC charges will apply.

However, you will be eligible for a refund of the transfer charges.

    • Uday Trivedi says:

Yes, I did it last year.

      • Uday Trivedi says:

For ICICI direct, online transfer is possible. You need to submit one form offline and then you can transfer shares online anytime. Check with ICICI Bank for details.

    • Anis Sarang says:

yes online transfer of shares is allowed.

  96. Johaan Shobi says:

I currently have an account with another broker. If I transfer shares from that account to Zerodha, & close that account, will I still be eligible for BSDA?

    • P.K.Inani says:

Zerodha would not know why have you done the transfer, they would also not know that some other account has been closed. Lastly, there are no condition mentioned in the policy except cap of Rs 500/- which is not clear . Is this amount one time, once in a year, once a month or max in one transfer. Answer to your query, zerodha will refund their side of charges for intra DP charges. This is my understanding. The policy is directed to move securities to zerodha’s initiated DP accounts.

    • Shubham says:

Hi Johaan, yes, since you will only be holding one demat account, it will be eligible for BSDA, given that holdings value is less than Rs. 10 lakhs.

    • Sudeep says:

Yes, you may still be eligible for BSDA, provided that after transferring your shares and closing the other demat account, you meet the BSDA eligibility criteria. BSDA is generally available only if you hold a single demat account

    • S.ANUPAMM SADDHUKHAN says:

BSDA Means to total holding less 4lakh will be free for zerodha in a single PAN. Demat may be in different broker but sum of hold below 4 lakh will be AMC free for case of zerodha demat. Other AMC charge mentioned as per table.

  97. Sameer says:

I didnt wanted to have another demat account, but had to open one with broker because Zerodha not offer commodity delivery. If Zerodha would be offering the same I would be happy to close my other account.

    • Saurabh Gupta says:

The actual friction is not the dp cost of transfer securities but import of holding cost and acquisition date , for accurate tax computation. There needs to be some seamless process to migrate the details inter borker

  98. Pothi says:

Good to know. I moved early this year. I was concerned about AMC charges while migrating. In the end, I ended-up migrating stocks to my spouse’s account and started from zero in Zerodha. I wish it had come a bit sooner. Nevertheless, happy with Zerodha so far.

    • Maheswaran B says:

Can you please tell when will you implement the US Stocks buying option

    • Arjun Jha says:

I currently have an account with another broker. If I transfer shares from that account to Zerodha, & close that account, will I still be eligible for BSDA?

      • Shruthi says:

Hi Arjun, yes. To be eligible for a BSDA, you should have only one demat account associated with your PAN. If you transfer your holdings to Zerodha and close your other demat account, your account can become eligible for BSDA.

The conversion is subject to the BSDA eligibility criteria, including the value of holdings in your demat account being within the prescribed limit (currently up to ₹10 lakh). Once the other demat account is closed and the criteria are met, the account will be considered for BSDA classification.
