Account opening is now free at Zerodha

July 24, 2024

When we started in 2010, the account opening process was completely offline. As you’d expect, this led to a lot of back-and-forth if there were any issues with a customer’s paperwork. Opening an account had significant costs, and we had to charge an account opening fee to cover these costs.

The other reason for charging an account opening fee was that maintaining each account also has a cost. So the account opening fee also acted as a filter for only serious customers who wanted to start trading and investing.

Thanks to the introduction of Aadhaar-enabled KYC and e-signatures in 2016-17 account opening became fully online, and so we reduced our account opening fee from ₹600 to ₹200.

Now, even the ₹200 fee no longer makes sense. Over the years, our mission has evolved from just offering the best platforms to helping Indians do better with their money. To further that goal in mind, we’ve made demat account opening free for all resident Indians starting June 29, 2024. So go tell all your friends!

Another Zerodha Customer , as per the conversation with Zerodha Customer Reps , The BSDA Basic Services Demat account options are automatically activated when you have only 1 demat and trading account. that is cheap enough and gives you no charges till 50000 value of holidings , but yes Zerodha , do make AMC cheaper and cheaper and apply after lakhs of holidings only
