Teaching children about money
Helping Indians learn how to manage their money is a cause that is near and dear to all of us at Zerodha. A meaningful part of that has been helping parents invest for their children’s future.
The earlier children start learning about money, the better. Good financial habits formed early tend to stick. Which is why last year, we made it possible for parents to open minor demat accounts completely online. Since then, parents have been opening accounts for children of all ages, with our youngest account holder being 64 days old ❤️
But minor accounts are just one part of what we have built for financial education. Over the past decade, we have created several initiatives to help children learn about money: Rupee Tales (illustrated books for young readers), Varsity Junior (animated videos for older children), school programs that bring financial literacy to thousands of students, and regular financial literacy quizzes across schools in India.
We can keep talking about these initiatives, but nothing beats hearing it from parents who are actually doing it. Here are some first-hand takes from people using a minor account to invest for their children:
What we have built to educate children
Rupee Tales: illustrated books for children
In 2016, we published five illustrated storybooks for children. The goal was to introduce basic financial concepts through simple stories that parents could read with their children.
The books cover:
- Savings – Anu learns to save money for the future
- Banking and inflation—Mani discovers why money is safe in banks
- Taxation – Vishrambu learns about public property
- Insurance – Tara wonders if she can insure her toys
- Stock markets – An eight-year-old receives a lesson in equity
All five books are available as free PDF downloads at rupeetales.com.
These books work well for children aged four and above.
Varsity Junior: animated videos for older children
Varsity Junior is an animated video series for children aged eight and above. Each episode tells a story about children in a small town. Their daily adventures, whether it is planning a budget for vegetables or wondering why a haircut costs more than last year, naturally lead to financial lessons.
Four episodes are currently available:
- Ideas by the Lake – The power of compound interest
- The Vegetable List – Budgeting and the value of money
- The Haircut Affair – Understanding inflation
- Mani’s Beloved Bag – Banking basics
The episodes are designed as stories, not lectures. Children watch them without feeling like they are in a classroom.
Watch all episodes at zerodha.com/varsity/junior.
Financial literacy in schools
Not every child has access to books or reliable internet at home, which is why we partnered with the Nagpur Zilla Parishad to bring financial literacy to over 1,500 government schools. Teachers were trained across 525 schools, reaching nearly 15,000 students.
What we found was encouraging. Some schools had already started their own initiatives—simulated banks where children deposited small amounts, filled out deposit slips, and maintained passbooks. In one school, children painted diyas, sold them at festivals, and deposited their earnings. One girl withdrew her entire savings of ₹75 to help her family when her parents could not find work during a festival.
We are working to expand this program to more schools across India. We have also been conducting regular financial literacy quizzes across schools, so far reaching 37 schools across 14 cities and engaging with nearly 10,000 students.
Minor accounts: learning by doing
Reading about investing is helpful. Watching videos about it is useful. But nothing teaches quite like actually doing it, which is why we introduced online minor account opening for parents to invest along with their children.

Good
I have opened my son demat account in zerodha and it is not functional…. I tried calling and reaching out to zerodha… but all in vain…
Children like:
1. Read small books like comic books.
2. Likes to see video reels.
3. Listening small story.
I am having 3 Grand children, can I also open free Zerodha account & operate in behalf of them ?
Your organization is friendly with state & Central Governments, you can convince them to introduce financial literacy in their regular syllabus. You can also provide them the stories you have created…
A good initiative to create future Jeff buffet of India in near by future more than usa rock family may create for future wealth management to fulfill Indian golden bird ethics of honourable Narendra Modiji vision
Mess up nationalism with everything? My goodness!
But why only in English? I always see zerodha to only give information in english only. They should educate people in hindi also.
Not only English and Hindi. Other main languages like Odia, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu etc should be included to reach maximum number of parents and children
Yes
Consider in Malayalam also
Yes Really Good suggestion
Dude, why such expectation from a private corporation? Are You so spoiled by the Freebies and Special treatment by the Govt vote bank politics that you feel privileged and think you can demand anything you want. Zerodha is pvt corporation, they will definitely do in any language they fit, if they see a benefit in it. Show some decency and be courteous!
Excellent initiative for financial education of children. Great work.
This is great initiative by Zerodha, for financial literacy to all especially for the upcoming future of India ,we all proud tothe great initiative.
I don\’t know why zerodha is fooling customers n traders by
1) heavy brokerage n discrepancy in brokerage even with same amount n lots
2) zerodha not linking any automation n make it difficult to trade with zerodha API
3) zerodha not connecting with tradingview terminal n let us use mind-blowing indicators n better stable charts of tradingview
4) zerodha not allowing trading from charts in kite mobile app
Seriously zerodha don\’t want to make us money
It just want to loot me
Come on let your app grow n let us breathe in good trades n trade automation
Since trading through zerodha for a long time we are not getting any trading support from zerodha but, we are being befooled instead, by not giving any stock recommendations like other licensed broker, geojit, groww etc offering to their customers.please consider our humble request with utmost priority and urgent.
Thanks
@Rajasekharan Nair , Are you here for the advisory service or brokering service? Providing recommendations will only benefit Zerodha by earning more brokerage then how can you tell it is looting by not providing recommendations? You must be desperate or dimwit to make such accusations.
Zerodha gives good platform
Great initiative, can you also make a page for kids how to open kids account to invest with small amounts for kids, like etf
First time I am seeing this, though I am your long time customer…. I will surely open one for my Grandson…thanks

Zerodha is tha best demat account
Zerodha is the best. I just opened secondary demat and closed 5 other demat accounts I had kept for investment because you are right, if it\’s in kite, it gives you an itch to trade. By bringing this tool, plus coin, all my MF and stocks will move to Zerodha.
I love your products and company, you are truly innovative.
I am not a minor. STOP showing me these posts. Please.
I Malindo Kumar orang
Very nice to make our children educated
Help me open a minor account
Hi Praveen, we\’ve explained the account opening process here: https://support.zerodha.com/category/account-opening/minor/minor-online/articles/open-minor-account-online
I always admire the approach taken by zerodha for each new initiative and continuing it for longer term.
I have one request, with prior written approval from parents, only buying shares must be allowed. Gifting share can not working so smoothly as we think and it also create additional records to be maintain.
Plz take initiative and allow to buy and stay invested on kite for minors.
Hi Swapnil, buying stocks in a minor account isn\’t allowed as trading in stocks is a contractual activity between brokers and clients, and since minors cannot legally enter into binding contracts, any trade made by a minor would not be legally valid. SEBI also imposes this restriction to protect minors from potential market risks.
Make these articles sharable online for wider reach
After reading all comments, the best comment I found is the 1st one that is Vipin\’s comment. To educate not only kids but many new young students as well.

Feeling happy that I too think like you great persons🙏
Love Zerodha’s responsible approach! Your Kite app is awesome-would be even better with a demo version for practice trading. It’d help beginners learn without risking big losses and build confidence before going live.
Dear Sir/Madam
I U. VISWANATHAN have one account with you, I buy some shares at particular price. But when it goes down drastically, can I open one more account in my name only, and buy the same shares at lower price,so that when it goes up , I will sell in new account and make some profit. Please kindly suggest.
Sir u can buy new share in same account at current lower price it is not necessary to create a new account
Excellent initiative for present juniors future investors / traders.
is there any tax liability on kids? what are the legal requirements?
when does the account become as an adult account? how to transfer later on? any charges?
Useful initiative for allGenZkids at the right day
I really appreciate Zerodha’s responsible attitude toward new traders—love it! The Kite mobile app is already awesome, but I have a suggestion. It would be great if you could introduce a demo version of Kite for practice trading. This way, beginners can learn how to participate in the markets without risking large sums of money right away. A simulated environment would help users build confidence, understand order placement, and develop discipline before moving to live trading. I believe this would further strengthen Zerodha’s mission of empowering retail investors responsibly.
Hi Vipin, we\’ve noted your feedback. Thanks.
Very good initiative. Much appreciated
Every child should know about finance. Zerodha has taken a very good step.
TQ
Very excellent Programe was invited by zerodha. Thanks

Very very helpfull program
Good initiative
Good 👍
Great Initiative, It helps children to create large corpus to achieve their family financial freedom early on in their life.
I initiative is good but have views in how you see it / views you mentioned. My Different views – Why kids need to start early? Let them play, learn lif skills, make friends, achieve goals in school, learn basic transactions.. when they grow 18+ then can take serious path till then they can learn by listening , observing to people around and their parents. Its human life so live fully and not with focus on corpus .
This is a remarkable initiative, excellent work.
Great efforts put by zerodha, great initiative for Indian kids, thankyou
