Less than 1% of homes in India have adopted rooftop solar, compared to 7% in Brazil, 10% in Germany, and 30%+ in Australia.

India’s current power/energy generation capacity is around 450 Gigawatt (GW). With an ambition to add 500 GW more by 2030 as our energy requirements scale. With renewables taking precedence. This is why distributed rooftop solar on homes will play a huge role in this energy transition.

Naturally, India has announced bold ambitions for residential solar. Honourable Prime Minister has set a target to solarise 1 crore homes in India as soon as possible, a huge leap from the current penetration of just about 10 lakh homes having solar.

While the macro aspect is something to think about, the micro effect of solar is also worth spending time on. Indian families’ increased power consumption is also leading to increasing electricity bills, which adds to the pressure on disposable incomes for a large section of the population. Solar will play a massive role in decentralized power generation that is at a significant discount to grid-sourced power.

We can keep going, but you get the drift—homes or households producing their own free and clean electricity with solar must be mainstream. Rooftop solar should eventually become ubiquitous in households like televisions and refrigerators.

SolarSquare’s mission is to accelerate the mass adoption of residential solar in India. We are doing this by raising the installation quality standards, offering easy financing, and reliable after-sales service to Indian consumers.

The rooftop solar revolution has just started in India and all families going solar are first-time buyers with limited understanding of its quality, safety or performance aspects. India’s unorganized market is flush with fly-by-night installers, and poor and unsafe solar installations with limited to no maintenance service post installation. We saw an opportunity to create a brand which will stand for trust and quality, enabling Indian homes to embrace solar confidently.

SolarSquare’s journey started in 2015 as a business-to-business (B2B) rooftop solar company – installing solar for large corporations and Fortune 500 companies. By 2020 we ranked as the top 5 rooftop solar EPCs (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) in India and had learnt what it takes to design, engineer, install and maintain high-quality rooftop solar plants.

In 2021, during COVID lockdowns, we experimented with residential solar and very soon realized the complete lack of quality solutions and professional service providers in the consumer solar segment. That’s when we decided to pivot to residential solar with the ambition to become India’s most trusted residential solar brand.

In the last 3.5 years, we have scaled to become India’s #1 residential solar brand. So far, over 15,000 homes and 150+ housing societies have switched to solar with us. Our residential customers are saving Rs 100 Crore+ per year in electricity bills and helping reduce carbon emissions equivalent to planting 10 Lac+ trees.
