Introducing Boson Whitewater

Reality hit home this summer when we faced a water shortage in Bangalore, a city many of us Bangaloreans remember fondly from our childhood as the city of lakes.

At present, Bangalore needs about 2,632 (Million Litres per Day) MLD of fresh water. The Cauvery caters to about half of the city’s fresh water demand, and groundwater makes up for the other half.

Separately, about 1940 MLD of sewage is generated daily in Bangalore and there are over 3,500 apartments and commercial establishments running decentralised Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). Currently, the wastewater treated by STPs is of low quality, and mostly unusable beyond flushing and gardening. Over 80% of this excess STP water gets wasted.

This is where Boson Whitewater comes in. They treat this excess STP water at source, converting it to potable water which can be reused for all purposes. This water can meaningfully add to the available potable water supply in the city, potentially creating a huge dent in the water scarcity problem faced by Indian cities.

We are really excited about this approach to solving the water problem, and think it can scale to other cities as well. Hence, we’re supporting them in their mission.

On Boson Whitewater:

Indian cities keep facing water scarcity issues and each time they try to find a new source of river water. At Boson we are looking to create another source of water i.e from the waste water available in the City.

Boson is looking to use the excess STP treated water available in the apartments and convert it captively to high-quality water and sell the Whitewater to industries near the apartment so that they can avoid exploiting borewells or fresh water sources.

Boson Whitewater system is a unique patented 11-stage treatment process where each stage removes different contaminants and the resulting water meets the standards of potability. The system has all the IOT sensors to monitor the quality and quantity of water. Boson is currently selling about 8,30,000 litres of water per day and over the year it has saved 945 million litres from getting wasted.

Boson is looking to expand to other cities as well over the next few years and it just installed a system in Coimbatore. We are looking to save about 25 lakh litres of water per day compared to the current 8.3 lakh litres in the next 24 months. The only way for cities of our country to become sustainable is to recover and reuse any water going out of the city.
