India's BHEL misses third-quarter profit view on higher expenses
Jan 28 (Reuters) - India's Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) BHEL.NS reported third-quarter profit below estimates on Tuesday as a surge in expenses outweighed a modest rise in power demand.
The power and industrial equipment manufacturer reported a net profit of 1.25 billion rupees ($14.5 million) for the three months ended Dec. 31, compared to a loss of 2.13 billion rupees a year earlier.
Analysts, on average, had estimated a profit of 1.68 billion rupees, as per data compiled by LSEG.
BHEL's total expenses surged 31% to 72.25 billion rupees, owing to a 22% rise in input costs. It also incurred 9.07 billion rupees worth of "other expenses", without specifying details.
Meanwhile, domestic power generation rose in the October-December quarter, although it grew only 3% compared to 12% a year earlier. Power growth slowed down in the latter half of 2024, Reuters reported earlier this month.
The slowdown in power generation comes in line with the country's manufacturing activity growth, which remained tepid for two of the three months in the period but grew on a year-on-year basis.
Revenue from operations jumped nearly 32% to 72.77 billion rupees in the quarter, owing to a 32% rise in revenue from the power segment.
BHEL is the first among its peers to report quarterly results, with larger rival Tata Power TTPW.NS set to post quarterly earnings next month.

India's BHEL posts Q2 profit on higher power equipment sales
Oct 28 (Reuters) - India's state-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals BHEL.NS reported a second-quarter profit on Monday, as higher sale of power products offset an increase in expenses, sending its shares 6.3% higher.
The power and industrial equipment manufacturer reported a net profit of 966.7 million rupees ($11.5 million) for the quarter ended Sept. 30 against a loss of 583 million rupees a year ago.
BHEL, which accounts for 55% of the country's total installed power generation capacity, said its revenue from operations jumped 28.5% to 65.84 billion rupees in the quarter.
Revenue from the power segment, which contributes to more than 75% of BHEL's total revenue, rose 23.5% to 50.28 billion rupees.
Its expenses rose 19% to 65.71 billion rupees, driven by an 18% rise in the cost of raw materials and services.
The company revised its year-ago adjusted expenses lower to 55.19 billion rupees from 57.53 billion rupees, including an increase in deferred tax and a reduction in provisions and write-offs, according to an exchange filing.
With limited competition in the power equipment manufacturing space, BHEL is expected to have a healthy order pipeline, according to a note by Antique Stock Broking.
Shares of the company jumped as much as 10% after results before trimming gains to trade 6.3% higher at 230.6 rupees per share. BHEL's shares have risen around 19% year-to-date.
Rivals Tata Power TTPW.NS and Siemens SIEM.NS have yet to report their quarterly results.

India's Megha Engineering bags nuclear power generation deal worth $1.53 billion
BENGALURU, June 26 (Reuters) - Indian multi-sector infrastructure firm Megha Engineering & Infrastructures (MEIL) won a contract worth 128 billion rupees ($1.53 billion) in a tender floated by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL).
The contract includes the construction of two 700 megawatts (MW) of electrical reactors at Kaigs in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, MEIL said on Wednesday, adding that it is the highest-valued tender ever rolled out by the state-run NPCIL.
Reuters reported in February that India will likely invite $26 billion in its nuclear energy sector to increase the amount of electricity generation from sources that do not produce carbon dioxide emissions.
NPCIL owns and operates the country's current fleet of nuclear power plants and its latest tender received bids from infrastructure major Larsen and Toubro LART.NS and state-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals BHEL.NS, MEIL added.
"This contract represents the most significant project for MEIL and our strategic entry into the nuclear energy sector," said MEIL Director Ch Subbaiah.
