India to remain bright spot for petchem demand in 2025
By Mohi Narayan
NEW DELHI, Feb 14 (Reuters) - India will be a bright spot for petrochemical demand in 2025 even as global consumption lags supply, amid rising demand for electric vehicle parts, solar panels and household appliances, industry executives said on the sidelines of India Energy Week conference.
"We are seeing good local demand in the sectors like propylene where our company operates," Bharat Petroleum's BPCL.NS director of refineries Sanjay Khanna said.
Indian Oil IOC.NS Chairman A S Sahney said demand is expected to remain resilient this year.
Petrochemicals are used in key building blocks for a variety of goods such as plastics, paints, and pharmaceuticals.
Ganesh Gopalakrishnan, TotalEnergies's TTEF.PA global head of petrochemical trading, said there is good demand from the automobile sector while white goods consumption is recovering.
However, global petrochemical margins are expected to stay depressed for a few more years amid weak demand from top petrochemical consumer China and excess supply from new Chinese and Middle Eastern plants.
"The industry is waiting for China to announce its big incentive plan in March," said TotalEnergies's Gopalakrishnan, adding that this could spur China's demand and improve global petrochemical margins.
Refiners in India have been insulated from losses because they produce their own petrochemical feedstock naphtha, margins have been negative in the last 3-4 years for standalone plants which rely on imported feed, said Pankaj Srivastava, an analyst at consultancy Rystad Energy.
Meanwhile, investments continue to pour into India. The country is expected to receive $87 billion worth of investments in the next decade to meet the nation's rising demand for petrochemicals, the country's oil minister Hardeep Singh Puri said last year.
He said India consumes 25 to 30 million metric tons of petrochemical products annually, and the chemical and petrochemicals sector, currently valued at $220 billion, is expected to grow to $300 billion by 2025.
Companies such as Nayara Energy and Haldia Petrochemicals have already announced plans to boost production.
Petronet LNG is setting up a petrochemical complex of 750,000 metric tons-per-year (tpy) propane dehydrogenation unit and 500,000 tpy polypropylene unit in the western state of Gujarat.
"The downturn in petchems has always been cyclical and we hope margins will recover in next three years," Petronet LNG Chief Executive Akshay Kumar Singh said.

Rise in US LNG production to benefit India, CEO of Petronet LNG says
By Sethuraman N R
Jan 27 (Reuters) - An increase in LNG production in the United States after President Donald Trump ended a moratorium on new export permits should benefit consuming nations like India, the chief executive of the country's top gas importer said on Monday.
Trump last week ordered the U.S. Energy Department to resume the consideration of LNG export applications after the Biden administration froze them.
"If more LNG plants come in the U.S., it will stabilise international LNG prices," Petronet LNG Chief Executive Akshay Kumar Singh said in a post earnings media call.
"For a consuming nation (like India), it is expected that if prices are in the range of $7 to $8 per million British thermal units (mmBtu), the consumption will drastically improve because there is no shortage of customers, they are just price sensitive," Singh said.
Singh expects LNG prices to hover around $12-$14 per mmBtu in the current quarter on strong demand from Europe.
European gas reserves are some 17 billion cubic metres (bcm) lower than at the same time in 2024, according to ICIS analyst Alex Froley.
The additional volumes required to refill them could also keep prices elevated in the second quarter of the year, Singh said.
He also said Petronet is working to start supplies of LNG to neighbouring Sri Lanka, after signing a deal to supply LNG engineering firm LTL Holdings' power plants in Colombo for five years through a terminal in the southern Indian city of Kochi.

Modi says India plans to supply LNG to Sri Lanka, connect power grids
Adds details of joint statement from paragraph 2
NEW DELHI, Dec 16 (Reuters) - India plans to supply liquefied natural gas to Sri Lanka's power plants and will work on connecting the power grids of the two countries as well as lay a petroleum pipeline between the neighbours, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday.
Modi was speaking at a joint press briefing with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in New Delhi.
Dissanayake is on his first official visit to Sri Lanka's powerful neighbour after winning the presidency in September and securing a landslide parliamentary election victory last month.
Indian state-run firm Petronet LNG PLNG.NS has signed a deal to supply liquefied natural gas to Sri Lankan engineering firm LTL Holdings' power plants in Colombo for five years through its terminal in the southern Indian city of Kochi.
Both sides also discussed a plan to connect power grids and lay a multi-product petroleum pipeline between the two countries, a joint statement from the Indian External Affairs Ministry said.
The two countries also agreed to jointly develop offshore wind power potential in the Palk Straits, an area where India's Adani Green Energy Ltd. ADNA.NS already has plans to invest $442 million in two wind power stations.
Sri Lanka is reviewing the wind power project along with a $553 million terminal project at the Colombo port also linked to Adani Ports APSE.NS. But it was unclear if the projects were discussed during the meeting between Modi and Dissanayake.
Last month, U.S. authorities accused Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani and seven others of being part of a $265 million scheme to bribe Indian officials, and of misleading U.S. investors while raising funds there.
The ports-to-power conglomerate has termed the allegations "baseless" and said it would seek "all possible legal recourse".
India extended more than $4 billion in aid to Sri Lanka when the island nation's economy plunged into a severe financial crisis in 2022 and entered into a preliminary debt restructuring agreement, along with other bilateral creditors Japan and China, in July.
The two countries will now finalise discussions on the bilateral memorandum of understanding needed to complete the debt restructuring process, the joint statement added.

Indian LNG imports to hit 150 mln tons by 2030 -Petronet LNG CEO
Adds comments from Petronet LNG CEO, details and background throughout
By Sudarshan Varadhan
QUITOL, India, Feb 7 (Reuters) - Indian liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports are forecast to jump to 150 million metric tons per year (tpy) by 2030 and the country will need the equivalent re-gasification capacity to achieve its targets, Petronet LNG's CEO said on Wednesday.

QatarEnergy and India's Petronet sign biggest LNG deal to date
Updates with Petronet LNG statement paragraph 1 onwards, Qatar energy minister paragraph 10-11
By Nidhi Verma
QUITOL, India, Feb 6 (Reuters) - QatarEnergy and India's Petronet LNG PLNG.NS signed their biggest single deal for supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG) on Tuesday, as India ramps up use of the fuel in a bid to curb emissions.
The deal will see Qatar supply 7.5 million metric tons per year of LNG to Petronet LNG on a delivered ex-ship basis (DES) from 2028 to 2048, according to a Petronet LNG statement.
Qatar, the world's second largest LNG exporter, is pushing to play a larger role in Asia and Europe as competition from top supplier U.S. increases. It plans to expand its liquefaction capacity to 126 million tons per year by 2027 from 77 million.
Tuesday's agreement is a renewal of an existing deal expiring in 2028 in which Petronet LNG imports 7.5 million metric tons per year of LNG from Qatar on a free-on-board (FOB) basis, priced at a slope of 12.67% of the current Brent crude oil futures prices and a fixed charge of 52 cents per million British thermal units (mmBtu).
Petronet LNG's statement did not say if the pricing terms for the renewed deal are the same.
Offtakers of the LNG volumes are GAIL (India) Limited, Indian Oil Corporation Limited and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, who will take supplies of the super-chilled fuel at a 60:30:10 ratio respectively after it is regassified at Petronet's Dahej import terminal, said Petronet LNG.
Petronet LNG, India's top gas importer, supplies gas that is mostly procured under long-term deals with Qatar and Australia to Indian energy companies for sale to end-users. These companies also have booked capacity at Dahej to directly import gas.
Petronet LNG chief executive Akshay Kumar Singh said in the statement that its existing long-term agreement with QatarEnergy accounts for around 35% of India's LNG imports.
India imported 10.6 million tons of LNG from Qatar in 2023, about half of India's total LNG imports of 20.8 million tons last year, according to data from LSEG.
India wants to raise the share of natural gas in its energy mix to 15% by 2030, up from 6.2% currently, as part of an effort to cut planet-warming emissions.
"We are here to serve the market in India and we hope to be part of the expansion of the economy and requirements and the energy sector," said Qatar's energy minister Saad al-Kaabi, who is also QatarEnergy's CEO, on the sidelines of India Energy Week event in Goa on Tuesday.
He said Qatar was "talking to a lot of our colleagues in Indian companies about new deals."
Reuters earlier reported citing three sources that Petronet LNG would sign the deal with Qatar. One of the sources said that the fixed charge for Qatari LNG will not be in the renewed deal.
Petronet is also expected to sign a separate deal for LNG supplies on a delivered basis, all three of the sources said.
Qatar aims to expand its liquefaction capacity to 126 million tons per year by 2027 from 77 million tons per year and has signed long-term deals with European majors Shell SHEL.L, TotalEnergies TTEF.PA and ENI ENI.MI.
