The secondary account keeps long-term holdings separate from trading positions, and they don\u2019t even show up on your trading screen. If you do feel the urge to sell, you can\u2019t do it instantly, you first need to transfer shares back to your main account, which takes a day. That pause acts as a cooling-off period, giving you time to think instead of panic-selling.<\/p>\n<h3>Separation of long-term investments and short-term trades<\/h3>\n<p>It also solves a tax problem. India\u2019s First In First Out (FIFO) rule means your oldest shares are considered sold first, even if you meant to sell newer ones.<\/p>\n<p>For example, imagine you bought a stock at \u20b92,000 in January to hold long-term and again at \u20b92,500 in March just for a short trade. If you sell the March shares, the system still treats it as if you sold the January ones first. This not only disrupts your long-term plan but can also lead to unexpected tax consequences.<\/p>\n<p>With two demat accounts, FIFO applies separately. Your long-term investments stay untouched in the secondary account, while you can trade freely in the main account without accidentally messing up your tax plan.<\/p>\n<p>When you transfer shares between your primary and secondary demat accounts, the buy average and acquisition date remain the same. For example, if you bought 100 shares of Infosys in January 2022 at \u20b91,500 and later moved them to your secondary account, they will still show the same buy average of \u20b91,500 and acquisition date of January 2022.<\/p>\n<p>A secondary demat helps you stay organized, make better decisions, and manage taxes more efficiently. You can open one for free on Console.<\/p>\n<h4>How to open a secondary demat account<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Log in to Kite.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Click on your user ID and then on Console.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Click on\u00a0<em>Account\u00a0<\/em>and then on\u00a0<em>Demat.<\/em><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Click on\u00a0<em>Secondary\u00a0<\/em>and then on\u00a0<em>Continue.<\/em><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Enter nominee details.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Confirm the undertaking and click on\u00a0<em>Continue.<\/em><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Complete the\u00a0In-Person Verification (IPV).<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Click on\u00a0<em>Sign Now.<\/em><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Enter your Aadhaar number, tick the undertaking and click on\u00a0<em>Get OTP.<\/em><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Enter the OTP you received and click on\u00a0<em>Verify OTP.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/zerodha.com\/z-connect\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ope.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Your secondary demat account will be opened in 48\u201372 working hours. You\u2019ll get an email confirmation from Zerodha, and it will appear under the Demat section in Console.<\/p>\n<h4>How to transfer shares to the secondary demat account<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Tap on your user ID.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Tap on\u00a0<em>Portfolio.<\/em><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Scroll down and tap on the stock you want to transfer.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Tap on\u00a0<em>Transfer to secondary demat account.<\/em><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Select the stock, enter the quantity to transfer and tap on\u00a0<em>Continue.<\/em><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Authorise the debit of stocks by entering the CDSL TPIN and OTP.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/zerodha.com\/z-connect\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/auth-ezgif.com-optimize.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>First-time setup: add secondary demat as beneficiary<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Between 3 and 5 PM on trading days, CDSL will email you a link.<\/li>\n<li>Enter your PAN and 16-digit demat ID<\/li>\n<li>Click Submit.<\/li>\n<li>Tick beneficiary details \u2192 Generate OTP \u2192 Accept \u2192 OK. (Once added, you won\u2019t need to repeat this step.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Confirm the transfer<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>At 5 PM the same day, CDSL will send an email\/SMS.<\/li>\n<li>Verify by 8 PM using PAN or demat ID with OTP.<\/li>\n<li>If you miss the 8 PM deadline, the transfer must be restarted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Securities will reflect in your secondary demat account the next day. Transfer charges of \u20b913 + 18% GST = \u20b915.34 per security per transaction will be applicable for the transfer of shares.<\/p>\n<p>Once transferred, shares won\u2019t appear in Kite holdings but can be tracked on Console.
