Out of many reasons for rejection, \u2018service overlap\u2019 is one.<\/p>\n<p>But fortunately, EPFO has come out with a circular that \u2018service overlap\u2019 can\u2019t be the sole reason to reject any transfer claims.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick explanation of a service overlap and transfer claim (to merge PF accounts) and how this new circular helps.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What is a Service Overlap in EPFO?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A service overlap occurs when EPFO records show that you were employed by two organisations at the same time. That sounds unusual, but it\u2019s more common than you\u2019d think \u2014 and often just a clerical error.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Job switch without a proper exit date<\/strong>\n<div class=\"css-175oi2r\" data-testid=\"cellInnerDiv\">\n<div class=\"css-175oi2r r-1adg3ll r-1ny4l3l\">\n<div class=\"css-175oi2r\">\n<article class=\"css-175oi2r r-1ut4w64 r-18u37iz r-1udh08x r-1c4vpko r-1c7gwzm r-o7ynqc r-6416eg r-1panhkp r-1ny4l3l r-1loqt21\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"article\" aria-labelledby=\"id__sxytsjw2tab id__5dufqnmaxo id__h9egznp6rud id__ptdjbfl3ugm id__vu37yfn76gl id__f91wntiy0qg id__dqekzndcwvo id__eo79pqie4wa id__1khmp25basm id__gqzy54k3paj id__zn881rxkwnb id__4hgvvjmuyeh id__uxxu6rsue7 id__bot16nfpwub id__a5khu7qe6db id__3bi8p2d7vme id__xm0e0lxlp8 id__b7r1p57gpbj id__aly2x2jytjd id__qphph50ue7\" data-testid=\"tweet\">\n<div class=\"css-175oi2r r-eqz5dr r-16y2uox r-1wbh5a2\">\n<div class=\"css-175oi2r r-16y2uox r-1wbh5a2 r-1ny4l3l\">\n<div class=\"css-175oi2r r-18u37iz\">\n<div class=\"css-175oi2r r-1iusvr4 r-16y2uox r-1777fci r-kzbkwu\">\n<div class=\"css-175oi2r\">\n<div id=\"id__zn881rxkwnb\" class=\"css-146c3p1 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-37j5jr r-a023e6 r-rjixqe r-16dba41 r-bnwqim\" dir=\"auto\" lang=\"en\" data-testid=\"tweetText\"><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">When you leave your job to join another employer, and your old employer doesn\u2019t update your exit date, it might show as an overlap.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Errors in updating dates<\/strong><br \/>\nEven a small mistake in your joining or exit dates \u2014 whether by your employer or while self-declaring \u2014 can cause a conflict.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dual employment<\/strong><br \/>\nIn some cases, if you held two jobs briefly and both employers contributed to your PF, the system flags it as an overlap.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Why Was This a Problem?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Each EPF member is assigned a Universal Account Number (UAN) \u2014 a unique 12-digit number that stays the same across jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever you switch jobs, your new employer opens a new PF account under your UAN. To consolidate your savings, you must raise a transfer claim to merge your old PF account with the new one.<\/p>\n<p>But if there\u2019s an overlap in service at any point in your employment history, EPFO would reject your transfer request. The problem with not having PF accounts merged is that:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li><strong>Restricted access to the full PF balance<\/strong><br \/>\nYou could only withdraw from your latest PF account, not your total accumulated balance. For example, 50% withdrawal for a child\u2019s education will be based only on the latest account balance, not your total PF savings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li><strong>Interrupted service history<\/strong><br \/>\nThis affects tax benefits and pension eligibility \u2014 for example, 5 years of continuous service avoids TDS; 10 years qualifies you for a pension. But if the account is not merged, then past service records may not be considered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Overlap Issue Now Resolved by EPFO<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>You would have noticed that even minor mismatches or overlaps could block your PF transfer. EPFO is working to streamline them. In 2025, EPFO updated its regulations that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Overlap alone can no longer be a reason for rejection.<\/li>\n<li>If your UAN is KYC-compliant, your old PF balance is auto-transferred once your new employer deposits the first month&#8217;s contribution \u2014 no need to raise a transfer request.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is a huge relief for employees who have to manually raise a transfer claim and face unnecessary delays or rejections due to small date mismatches.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Still Need to Merge Your PF Accounts? Here\u2019s How<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Now that the overlap issue is sorted, merge your PF accounts by raising a transfer claim (if not already done).<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Log in to the <a href=\"https:\/\/unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in\/memberinterface\/\">EPF member portal<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Go to Online Services &gt; One Member \u2013 One EPF Account (Transfer Request)<\/li>\n<li>Ensure your UAN is KYC-compliant and your bank details are updated<\/li>\n<li>Select your previous employer\u2019s account to transfer<\/li>\n<li>Choose either your current or previous employer for verification<\/li>\n<li>Verify via OTP and submit<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Check your passbook to see if the amount was transferred. The amount will be reflected as a credit in the latest passbook.
