Whether we call it a crisis or a turning point, one thing is clear: water efficiency is set to become a defining benchmark for responsible business and industrial growth.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why we\u2019re choosing to focus on water.<\/p>\n

Water isn\u2019t just a basic need \u2014 it\u2019s a critical, undervalued resource at the heart of sustainable development. With supportive policy shifts, rising consumption, and emerging innovations, we see a compelling opportunity to invest in water as a driver of long-term change.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re particularly optimistic about solutions that enhance water efficiency across the spectrum \u2014 from sourcing to usage to treatment. These innovations are essential not only in agriculture but across sectors where water plays a foundational role.<\/p>\n

One such company is Greenvironment Innovation and Marketing India Pvt Ltd<\/a>, focused on solving water and environmental problems using smart technology. The company was born out of the need to address India\u2019s growing water crisis. Over time, Greenvironment has grown into a full-scale business that helps buildings, communities, and industries manage water better through digital tools.<\/p>\n

What do they do?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Greenvironment integrates data from a variety of sources, including SCADA systems, IoT-based water flow metres (ultrasonic, electromagnetic, and turbine), water level sensors, water quality sensors (covering parameters like pH, TDS, COD, BOD), energy data related to water infrastructure, satellite data, and water lab reports. This holistic data aggregation enables clients to make the most informed decisions in water management.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The sensors collect data over a cloud infrastructure on the quality, flow, energy and other environmental indicators from RO plants, water treatment plants, sewage treatment plants, and cooling towers. The real-time data from these utilities are visualised on a cloud-based analytics platform to predict the performance, faults and provide troubleshooting insights for the operations team. The Analytics dashboard explains water usage patterns in the building, efficiency metrics of the utilities in terms of treatment, filtration and disinfection, the performance of automated systems and lifecycle support.<\/p>\n

By implementing this solution, establishments have reliable data to make appropriate decisions on water management and achieve fast recovery measures in case operational process stability is lost.<\/p>\n

Why did we decide to invest in them?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Businesses are facing an increasing cost and unavailability of water to meet daily needs. Sub-optimal performance of water utilities leads to high operating costs and leakage, while a lack of reliable data to make decisions on water and environmental infrastructure exacerbates this problem.<\/p>\n

More than being just a technology provider, Greenvironment is promoting a shift in mindset\u2014treating water not just as a resource, but as a system that must be managed responsibly through data and intelligence. In a world challenged by climate change and water stress, Greenvironment\u2019s vision is both timely and essential. By transforming ordinary infrastructure into smart, sustainable systems, they are helping secure a healthier future for people and the planet.<\/p>\n

The company is led by four founders: Varun Sridharan, who leads overall strategy and innovation; Sridharan Nair, who manages internal systems and team development; Mohanraj Makkuni, who supports business growth and funding; and Sam Thomas, who handles finance and planning. In addition to these four, Mr Jafeel is an independent director of Greenvironment who drives governance practices at the Board.<\/p>\n

Here is a note from Varun talking about their journey, business and future plans:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The journey began as a research project on wastewater policy, where I worked during the initial years after graduation. The project, led by Dr. Ligy Philip, Professor from the Civil Engineering Department at IIT Madras, focused on developing policies for reusing and managing wastewater in cities. During this time, I observed that even as cities were expanding, water systems were still managed manually, with little data or monitoring. There was a clear need for smarter systems that could provide real-time updates on how water and wastewater were being used and treated.<\/em><\/p>\n

We use artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to manage water in real time. We install smart systems for sewage treatment plants (STPs), water treatment plants (WTPs), rainwater harvesting, and effluent treatment units. These systems are monitored through a Real-Time Monitoring (RTM) platform. The platform collects data from sensors on water quality, flow, and energy use, and then processes this data to provide insights, early warnings, and solutions when something goes wrong. This helps the teams managing these systems take quick and accurate action.<\/em><\/p>\n

One of the most important aspects of our work is helping clients shift from reactive to proactive water management. Instead of waiting for a problem to occur, the system alerts users in advance. This improves efficiency, reduces energy and chemical use, and cuts down on manual intervention. We have also developed an AI assistant that learns from historical data and recommends ways to improve system performance, making it easier for operators to manage complex systems.<\/em><\/p>\n

We currently operate in over 300 buildings across India, including offices, hospitals, apartment communities, malls, hotels, and factories. Each new deployment adds valuable data to the platform, helping its AI become smarter and more effective. As industries and real estate projects place greater focus on sustainability and ESG, Greenvironment\u2019s value continues to grow.<\/em>
\nLooking ahead, we plan to scale our presence to a thousand buildings in India within the next 12-18 months. We are also executing CSR projects such as digitalising water monitoring in government institutions. Internationally, we have entered the Middle East market where we are offering solutions in line with regional sustainability goals.<\/em><\/p>\n

As part of its future roadmap, we are focused on expanding our digitalisation and automation capabilities. We are developing advanced AI models, image recognition tools, and digital twin technology to simulate and optimise system performance. We are also working on full plant automation, where AI will manage operations with minimal human input, ensuring higher reliability and efficiency.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
