They either don\u2019t own their house or live in an apartment in a city. Most likely, it&#8217;s both \u2014 that is, they are probably tenants in a high rise apartment block, with no balcony or access to the rooftop.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two engineering graduates were ruing this problem when they asked why solar couldn\u2019t be in the cloud. And, like many other founders trying to solve for a pain-point they faced, they roped in a third friend and went about doing just that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SundayGrids is a start-up that combines the benefits of community, digital and gross metering, such that anyone can invest in solar, without having the space for it, or even an electricity account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watch our interview with its three founders on the latest Climate Conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tzdTcXhbpQ0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-community-solar\"><strong>Community solar<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Solar farms offer the benefits of &#8216;community solar&#8217;. Essentially, multiple people can come together and pay a developer to install and maintain a solar farm close to their homes. The benefits of this approach over individual solar installations is marginal, and probably only comes from the economies of scale. While popular in the US, it\u2019s relatively rare to hear about this in India. That said, <a href=\"https:\/\/india.mongabay.com\/2023\/01\/delhi-proposes-community-solar-rooftops-to-encourage-renewable-growth\/\">Delhi has proposed c<\/a>ommunity solar recently, and <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/business\/india-business\/empowering-communities-through-a-new-cooperative-solar-ownership-structure-community-solar\/articleshow\/110804279.cms\">it\u2019s being discussed as a beacon of promise<\/a> elsewhere too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But finding the space is still a challenge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-virtual-solar\"><strong>Virtual solar<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, commercial and industrial (C&amp;I) buildings have rooftops and need electricity too. Indeed they usually pay a higher tariff for power than residential. But commercial users may not have any capital to spare for a solar installation (or may have higher ROI requirements).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So SundayGrids does some nifty trading. The residential user puts in capital to \u2018reserve\u2019 capacity, i.e. some solar panels. Enough users pool their capital and get a solar farm installed on the rooftop of a commercial or industrial building. The power is sold and consumed at location itself, by the commercial user. The revenue generated gets credited to the residential investor as a credit against their electricity bill.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the whole process is virtual anyway, there doesn\u2019t really need to be a link between the amount the residential user\u2019s electricity needs and the amount they reserve. So the residential user is really an investor &#8211; who can earn more than 10 percent tax-free (check what happens when the income exceeds all bills?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1202\" height=\"1070\" src=\"https:\/\/zerodha.com\/z-connect\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/image-9.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-387635\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zerodha.com\/z-connect\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/image-9.png 1202w, https:\/\/zerodha.com\/z-connect\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/image-9-300x267.png 300w, https:\/\/zerodha.com\/z-connect\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/image-9-1024x912.png 1024w, https:\/\/zerodha.com\/z-connect\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/image-9-768x684.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1202px) 100vw, 1202px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gross-and-net-metering\"><strong>Gross and net metering<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of rooftop solar, the residential user is both a consumer and producer, or a \u2018prosumer\u2019. One can only \u2018net off\u2019 the power generated and put into the grid during the day against the power consumed in the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if power is being generated on behalf of a <em>residential producer<\/em> and consumed by a<em> commercial user<\/em>, there&#8217;s a tariff arbitrage. This is what SundayGrids exploits. This is done through \u2018gross metering,\u2019 which is basically two separate meters \u2014 one for production and another for consumption.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the founders explain in the episode, this arrangement also means that residential users can fund power generation in another part of the country, where the weather is better suited for a solar installation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bookmyshow-of-solar-power\"><strong>BookMyShow of solar power<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The founders explain that they got into the physical installations to get the flywheel going. That is, they had to build the theatres so that there were enough shows in the market that users can book. Now that these solar installations are coming up everywhere, SundayGrids is getting them listed on their platform, where residential users can \u2018reserve\u2019 a portfolio.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other side of the equation, because of a partnership with BillDesk to offset electricity bills, residential users can use these credits to offset against any bill in Billdesk&#8217;s menu.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re constantly amazed by the solutions young graduates come up with for start-ups that address climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>May the sun keep shining, even when it\u2019s raining, even when it\u2019s night \u2014 or even when it\u2019s Sunday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SolarGrids is building solar energy in the cloud.
