Comment on Tax loss harvesting opportunity - FY 2017/18

if i have a tax loss harvesting opportunity of 5 lakhs does that mean i have to sell 10-20 lakhs worth shares booking 5 lakhs short term loss and offset from the shortterm gain. will this not be only for taxation purpose. wont i be really losing value of my portfolio even if it is (false) assuring that i will keep the same portfolio. by this arent we making unrealised loss into realised loss ?
